The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
