The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25k award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the UK's small concert spaces.

The star was awarded the prize on October 16 as his third album People Watching was named the best record of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these locations have ceased operations – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by including a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also participated, generating over £100k on his live tour to help thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

The donation helped spaces that were facing imminent closure due to issues stemming from floods, fires and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in modernizing amenities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from concerts in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.
