The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
