Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the substance was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important official stated the attack made him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
