WHO Sounds Alert Over Acute Shortage of Weight-Loss Jabs

Less than a tenth of patients that would benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Per estimates, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and ongoing support," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key barriers to widespread access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, notes the agency.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Despite the present most optimistic scenario, the manufacturing of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The guideline urges countries and companies to increase access, through approaches like voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Function

The injections mimick a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost the sense of being full so people eat less.

Patients typically begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Studies indicates people may regain a significant portion within a year of stopping the drug, when their usual appetite return.

Being above a healthy weight increases your chance for developing health problems, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Obesity affects people in all nations and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
